Re-Development of Hammersmith Town Hall

New plans for Hammersmith Town Hall
LBHF have revealed their latest plan for the re-development of Hammersmith Town Hall, following the fiasco with the previous developers, whose legacy is the destruction of the attractive old Art Deco cinema on King Street, replaced by a hole in the ground. Public consultations on the new proposals are to take place on Thursday 9 November from 4pm to 8pm, and Saturday 11 November from 10am to 2pm. All are welcome.

The council’s new development partner is A2 Dominion, a not-for-profit housing provider. A2Dominion Housing Group describes itself as "an exempt charity registered under the Co-operative & Community Benefit Societies Act 2014".

The architects are Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. The "Rogers" bit is the famous Richard Rogers, who founded the firm of architects back in 1977, and is known for many buildings including the Lloyd's Building.

The brief for the new project includes:

  • A cinema
  • At least 50 per cent genuinely-affordable housing for local residents
  • Demolishing the ugly Town Hall extension
  • A new public space in front of a restored Town Hall
  • Staying within the massing and height of the former scheme
  • New affordable, flexible office space for business start-ups
  • A new arts quarter alongside new cafes, shops and restaurants
  • Improved green spaces to help link King Street to the riverside
  • Inclusive design to ensure excellent disability access
  • Measures to green the environment and minimise the buildings’ carbon footprint.

If you would like to see the initial designs, come to one of the consultation events at Hammersmith Town Hall.

There will be more of these preliminary consultations in early December. To register your interest, you can email NewTownHallScheme@lbhf.gov.uk or call 020 8753 5892 and leave your details.
