Engine Idling is Now Illegal in Shepherd's Bush

One of the many gripes that comes up at residents' meetings in our neighbourhood is cars and lorries running their engines while they are parked, belching pollution into the air while their vehicle is stationary.

Recently, our Council has followed the example of Westminster, and have found a way to issue fines for drivers who run their engines while sitting motionless in the street.

So, good news then for anyone who likes breathing clean air.
This looks like an example of LBHF responding in a positive way to voter's concerns.

One local resident in our neighbourhood wrote to our MP, Andy Slaughter, back in 2017:

"Dear Andy,
It's pretty rare to have a Conservative borough move ahead of a Labour one when it comes to the environment. Given your prominence and reputation as an amazing constituency MP is there any way you can chivy LBHF into action on this?

In Westminster, it seems that marshals are out on the streets talking to drivers about the impact idling has on pollution, noise and health. From Monday 6 February 2017, if a driver is asked to turn their
Littering: illegal, but not enforced
engine off by a Marshal and refuses - they could be issued with an £80 Penalty Charge Notice.
Like other residents in Macfarlane Road, Wood Lane and Hopgood Street we have major problems because of Westfield, Pergola on the Park,Jazz FM, Subway and Woodys Grill.  Basically it is people waiting to pick up people from Westfield, Uber drivers and people ordering and picking up food.
If I need to do some more to drum up a petition or anything let me know.
Just think loads more money for the council to spend!  And to demonstrate that at last we have a council thinking about residents.
Thank you"

Of course, the real question is: will the law be enforced? Or, like the Council's laws against littering, will this be just another law that exists more in the breach than the observance?

  1. A category for this offence could be added to the 'H&F Report It' phone app, so that residents can report motorists that break this new law. With the undoubted flood of reports, the council would have to work out how to enforce it.

    1. Perhaps parking wardens will enforce it? If there is a revenue stream for LBHF then they will likely enforce the law, just like with existing parking rules, since it could bring in significant revenue.
