Japanese Garden Gets New "Torii" Gateway

New Gateway for Japanese Garden at Hammersmith Park
The Japanese Garden at Hammersmith Park has been given a new gateway, or "Torii", thanks to a generous donation by former Chair of the Friends of The Japanese Garden at Hammersmith Park, John Gordon-Smith.

The Japanese Garden at Hammersmith Park dates from 1910, and is the chief legacy of the Japanese-British Exhibition that took place in White City.

The Japanese Garden at Hammersmith Park is one of a handful of Japanese Gardens in London. They rely on volunteers to help maintain the garden and keep the pond free of litter and detritus. Gateway, or "Torii"

A Japanese Garden Gateway, or "Torii"
, is a traditional Japanese gateway that symbolically marks the transition from the mundane to the sacred. It is also a spot where "kami" (Japanese spirits) are welcomed and thought to travel through.

The original (and far more elaborate) gateway for the 1910 Japanese Exhibition at White City is now located at Kew Gardens.
