Speed Camera on the Uxbridge Rd |
Most of the time you can't travel over 5mph on the Uxbridge Rd due to the weight of traffic, as it's usually pretty much gridlock. But on rare occasions - like Sunday mornings when the road is free of traffic - you can travel faster than a crawl, and whizz along at - the excitement! - more than 20mph.
Today, travel over 20 mph on the Uxbridge Rd and you will get a court summons from the Metropolitan Police - an offence punishable by a £1,000 fine.
20mph Speed Limit
A few years back our local Council voted to impose a 20mph speed limit throughout the Borough. At the time, the police said they wouldn't enforce the rules, but they have obviously since changed their minds, and the new cameras must be collecting quite a haul of tickets.

The trouble is, of course, is that travelling at 20mph on Uxbridge Road feels unnaturally slow - "can't you go faster, Daddy?", "I feel like a snail", complain my children as we crawl along, travelling at a speed so slow that, while it may well be very safe, feels like a tortoise is at the wheel.
Follow the money
On the positive side, someone must be making money off this. Never mind the fact that the police seem to have given up on solving the problems of theft, burglaries and property crime generally - at least they can successfully squeeze drivers for a bit more cash. I hope they spend the money well.

Don't speed, or better yet don't drive in London, and you would have no need to "beware" and no one would be "making money off this".
