Friends of Hammersmith Park Inaugural Meeting

Hammersmith Park
The inaugural meeting of the Friends of Hammersmith Park took place on Tuesday September 10th.

Not to be confused with the Friends of the Japanese Garden at Hammersmith Park (which has now been folded into the Friends of Hammersmith Park), this new organisation has a broad brief to advocate on behalf of local residents and mediate with our Council on new proposals for Hammersmith Park.

The meeting took place at 6.30pm at Wood Lane Community Centre, in White City Close.

Virginia Ironside
The meeting was chaired local journalist and writer Virginia Ironside. Among those present were John Gordon-Smith, who for many years has chaired the Friends of the Japanese Garden at Hammersmith Park, Jason Peacock, the park’s police “ambassador”, and local ward councillor Natalia Perez.

Friends of Hammersmith Park is a new organisation founded by local writer and journalist Virginia Ironside. Virginia explained that the association's purpose was to advocate to the Council on behalf of local residents.

Hammersmith Park
Hammersmith Park is a long-neglected green corner of our neighbourhood that has seen big improvements in recent years. The excellent playground at Hammersmith Park was a very welcome upgrade, which took a long while to come but was worth waiting for.

The new playground is a huge improvement on what was there before and, coupled with the new Japanese lanterns, and the regeneration of TV Centre, has turned Hammersmith Park into a very attractive place to spend time.

Play Football
Many local residents were unhappy about the contribution made by Play Football to the park, in particular their apparent failure to act on a number of the benefits that were promised to the local community, such as free use of community rooms, and operation of a cafe and toilets available to all park users.  This forms part of a long-running controversy over Play Football, which dates back to 2014.

Other concerns raised included problems of crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour, and the as-yet undefined plans for the old bowling green, and plans for an adult gym which is to be built at some time in the future.

Bowling Green
Plans are in preparation by LBHF to bring in a new bowling Green. There is section 106 money available for this, which is "ring fenced" for this project.  Council officer Silvera Williams outlined plans for the bowling green, and Pauline McCormick promised to let us see copies of the tender and possible plans before they went ahead.

Drinking Fountain
LBHF are still waiting on advice from Thames Water about where to put the new proposed drinking fountain.

Site of proposed adult gym
Adult Gym
The old "willow tree" playground has been removed, and this is now a proposed area for a new adult gym to be installed. The area suggested for the gym is the triangle of land next to the entry to TV Centre (see right).

As to when these new projects will bear fruit, this will take some time, as the Council must draw up plans and then run consultations with local residents.
