TFL Plans for Wood Lane & Shepherd's Bush - Jun 5th

TFL have released consultation plans to re-arrange the traffic routes on Wood Lane & Shepherd's Bush Green, and to judge by the number of adverse comments in the threads at NextDoor, lots of locals are unhappy.  But don't forget that these are only consultations, nothing is fixed in stone. Right now TFL are asking local people what they think of the proposals, and the next public consultation is to be held this week at the Bush Theatre on Wednesday 5th June, at 5pm. So if you'd like to know more, come along and have your say.

The basic idea is to make Wood Lane, Holland Park Ave and Shepherd's Bush Green more pedestrian and cycle-friendly.  In general, if you're a pedestrian or a cyclist, it's probably good news. However there are no easy wins when it comes to designing streets for traffic. There will be losers, and in this case the losers are anyone driving a car.  For example, for the Holland Park Avenue section the proposals include removing one westbound lane from Holland Park Avenue and replacing it with a cycle lane.

The benefits to cyclists are undeniable, but it’s clear there will be some sacrifices in order to achieve this.

  1. The days of the car thankfully are numbered for any number of reasons, the destruction of the environment, and millions of road deaths each year just being two. Good to see TFL having the sense and vision to recognise this and to start making plans to accommodate a world without the moribund combustion engine.

  2. That's an interesting point of view Neeto, but perhaps little comfort for the many people who depend on cars to get around, and have no practical alternatives.

    1. This is a minority - many partially disabled people benefit hugely from bike lanes as bikes are easier for them than walking. When you think about the growing numbers of ebikes and services like pedal me (a taxi service using cargo bikes) building these lanes makes even more sense.

We have after all given the car every chance to work. Built a flyover carving up the community, cut streets in half and playing fields to enable the A4. Roughly 70 years of investment since the war and er, it's not exactly worked out has it? Average travel speeds lower than the 1910s. There's not a city in the world that works that is based around the car.

It's really quite refreshing once you stop using cars and get on a bike. I find it already way more pleasant (and I own a vintage MG, which is as fun as motoring gets). Segregated cycle lanes will only make it better and encourage everyone - young and old, fit and only partially able to walk - to cycle.

And then we might stop klling ourselves with pollution. That'd be an idea...

  3. It looks like RBKC may have killed this: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jun/14/kensington-and-chelsea-vetoes-flagship-road-safety-scheme

  4. I guess it was too much to expect RBKC to have either vision or sense. Still, it was good to be living in hope for just a few weeks.
