Summer Table Tennis is back at TV Centre

Outdoor Table Tennis is back at TV Centre on Wood Lane; the owners of upscale housing development and TV Sound Stages are putting up a big screen for visitors to watch summer sports, and have also provided two outdoor  tennis tables for summer entertainment. 

Children are welcome, and TV Centre even provide free table tennis bats and balls - though it's advisable to bring your own.

Stanhope and Mitsui Start "Phase 2" of Television Centre

Developers Stanhope and Mitsui Fudosan have announced the start of Phase Two of the development of Television Centre.

Among the new buildings is a huge new 25 storey tower located just south of the Broadcaster pub on Wood Lane (see image left). 

Phase Two comprises a total of 511 homes in four separate plots.

Peabody Trust, one of the UK's oldest charitable housing associations, is to acquire 142 affordable homes at Television Centre in White City, on Wood Lane. 

According to a recent press release, developer Stanhope have have exchanged contracts with Peabody for 142 new affordable homes in two new buildings at Television Centre, London, W12.

The buildings form part of the Television Centre development.

Designed by Maccreanor Lavington Architects, the new buildings will replace the existing former BBC multi-storey car park on Wood Lane, W12, opposite Westfield. 

Helios Returns to TV Centre

Helios is back

The gilded bronze figure of Helios, personification of the sun in Greek Mythology, has returned to cast his golden light in the courtyard of the newly rebuilt Television Centre. 

Helios underwent a long period of repair and renovation, having stood in the rotunda at Television Centre since the former BBC headquarters opened in 1960.

Pergola on the Roof, the rooftop restaurant that has brought outdoor dining to the top of the old soon-to-be-demolished BBC carpark on Wood Lane, has applied for planning permission to re-open in the summer of 2017.

Good news then for outdoor diners and assorted hipsters, but perhaps less welcome for the residents of Macfarlane Road who haven't necessarily been thrilled by the noise and general disturbance.

Last week the developers of Television Centre on Wood Lane held a meeting for local residents - to give the community an update on the progress of this massive development. 

At the meeting were representatives from Mace (builders) and Stanhope (developers), including Mace community liaison representative Mike Russell. 

At the meeting, residents were told that the development is currently on track to complete Phase One by the end of next year, though at present Phase Two now has no fixed timetable for completion.  So, what's going on at TV Centre?

Awards from The Hammersmith Society

Last week we reported on The Hammersmith Society's "wooden spoon" awards, for new architecture in our neighbourhood which got it wrong, and missed an opportunity to enhance our streets.

But the Hammersmith society doesn't only blow rasberries. Their Environmental Awards are primarily designed to praise good architecture which enhances our public spaces and adds to the beauty of our neighbourhood. Right now, there is a lot of building going on, and this year four awards were handed out for excellent schemes which helped to make our Borough a better place to live.

Open all summer long, Pergola on the Roof follows on from Storeys, last year's street food venture that brightened up White City for the summer of 2015.

TV Centre Phase Two - Good News or Bad News?

On wednesday Stanhope, the developers of TV Centre, hosted a "public drop-in" to view plans for Phase Two of their site, currently under construction on Wood Lane.

On display were detailed plans for the proposed townhouses at the rear of Frithville Gardens, and also the new flats and shops which will replace the existing multi-storey car park site on Wood Lane.

So, how do the plans look? Should us local residents welcome the new designs, or should we urge the developers to go back to the drawing board?

Last summer White City played host to Storeys, a pop-up food market which occupied the rooftop of the old BBC Car Park on Wood Lane, part of Stanhope's huge new TV Centre development.

This summer it's time for something slightly less informal - Pergola on the Roof will bring four new restaurants, serving customers under a "pop-up pergola" which will be installed on the roof of the car park.

Homes at Television Centre, former home of the BBC at White City, went on public sale for the first time on Saturday, April 23 - offering buyers the chance to own a slice of television history.

And it's clear that house prices in Shepherd's Bush have come a long way in the past few years. 

Prices of the 250 apartments for sale start from £700,000 for a one bedroom flat, from £950,000 for two bedrooms and from £1.4m for a three bedroom apartment.

Stanhope, the developer that is masterminding the redevelopment of the old BBC site on Wood Lane, have announced the three winners of their "school hoarding competition", launched in January this year.

The competition was to find "exciting designs from local school children for the Television Centre hoarding that runs alongside Hammersmith Park".

Stanhope, the developers who are masterminding the huge new build taking place on the old BBC TV site on Wood Lane, are organising a "public drop-in" to view plans for Phase Two of TV Centre.

The drop-in will take place on Wednesday 27 April at 6pm in the new Television Centre Marketing Suite - the new building opposite Wood Lane Station on Wood Lane.

Pop-Up "Silent Cinema" Comes to Television Centre This Summer

This summer White City developers Stanhope are hosting a pop-up "silent cinema" on the roof of the old car park on Wood Lane. Silent Cinema will run for six weeks, run by Electric Cinema (of Notting Hill and Shoreditch fame), and will be managed by Incipio Events.

But don't worry, "silent cinema" doesn't mean there is no sound; it just means there is no noise to disturb the neighbours.  Audience members will be provided with noise cancelling headphones to ensure there is no disturbance to local residents.

Silent Cinema will open to the public Wednesday to Sunday for six weeks between 22 June and 1 August 2016; on Mondays and Tuesdays there will be private viewings only.  Films will end no later than 11.30pm.

Shepherd's Bush's New Park

Did you know we're getting a new public park in Shepherd's Bush? It's all part of the new Westfield development, and that of St James to the north - on the old M&S warehouse site east of Wood Lane.

The whole area is being redeveloped, and the price exacted by the Council from the developers was a new public park. It's not huge and, since it runs below the Hammersmith and City tube line, it will be noisy. But still - new green lungs for our very urban neighbourhood can't be a bad thing.
