Shepherd's Bush Green is Still a Mess

Shepherd's Bush Green yesterday morning
Two years after we first started started posting about the sorry state of Shepherd's Bush Green, and the failure of our Council to do anything about the enforcement of laws against litter, things are as bad as ever.

Walk across Shepherd's Bush Green in the morning and you will see piles of fast food, empty bottles and cans, and a depressing picture of destitute humanity, for many of whom the serious drinking begins at 8am.

The worst of it is that there doesn't seem to be any attempt by our Council to enforce the laws against dropping litter.

Register to Vote by Monday - Or Lose Your Vote

Monday 22 May is the last chance to register to vote in the coming general election.  By now you should have had a letter confirming your registration and letting you know where your polling booth is located. Usually, it's a short walk from your house.

Plenty of people aren't registered in our Borough, and the 2014 changes in voter registration appear to have made things worse, especially among certain groups, such as students and minorities.

According to a recent piece in the Guardian, voter registration among school leavers has fallen 25% since individual registration of voters (rather than registration by the head of a household) came into force.

Uxbridge Road Residents To Sue Council Over Parking

A "Zone J Parking Campaign" has been launched by a "broad coalition of residents, churches, the mosque and local businesses". The coalition have launched a legal challenge to the new parking scheme that Hammersmith and Fulham Council have imposed on Zone J - the parking zone that extends up the Uxbridge Road.

According to the official website, legal action has been taken, "not to block better parking for residents, but to stop a thoroughly bad scheme and to get better and less oppressive parking controls".

Hammersmith Magistrates Court to Close

Hammersmith Magistrates Court
The Ministry of Justice announced yesterday that Hammersmith Magistrates Court is to be closed.

This latest closure follows on from last year's closure of Hammersmith County Court.

Anyone who needs access to the Law Courts will now have to travel outside our Borough.

Final Victory for Shepherd's Bush Market Traders?

Shepherd's Bush Market
Market traders at Shepherds Bush Market are celebrating a new legal victory, finally (it appears) seeing off the redevelopment project by Orion, which has been the subject of conflict and litigation for the past six years.

According to Leigh Day, solicitors for the market traders, Orion have abandoned their efforts to appeal the latest ruling in the ongoing legal battle over the future of the market.

Shepherd's Bush Green Is a Mess

Shepherd's Bush Green yesterday morning
Anyone who walks across Shepherd's Bush Green in the mornings will be familiar with the sea of litter that is deposited there every night.

Food, empty bottles, soda cans, McDonalds wrappers - all sorts of junk gets left there - often right next to the bins. It's a depressing sight, and there doesn't seem to be any attempt to enforce the laws against dropping litter.

Market Traders Win in Court of Appeal - Market Development Stalls Again

Shepherd's Bush Market
The Court of Appeal has overturned the decision of minister Eric Pickles to uphold a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) on a row of shops on Goldhawk Rd, adjoining Shepherd's Bush Market (see photo below).

Market traders are now celebrating the ruling, which overturns the High Court ruling made in August 2015 by Mr Justice Dove, and effectively blocks the development from going ahead.

Shepherd's Bush Market Back in the Court of Appeal on March 2

Shepherd's Bush Market
Spare a thought, once again, for the Shepherd's Bush Market traders, who will be in the Court of Appeal next week, on Wednesday March 2, to contest the latest High Court decision in the ongoing legal battle over the future of the Market.

They have been locked in a five year battle with developer Orion over the future of the site.

The most recent event in this long-running legal dispute occurred almost a year ago, in July 2015, when market traders appealed the 2014 decision by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles to uphold a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) over the site.
