LBHF Xmas Party 2019 |
Whilst I am personally fortunate enough to be younger and do have family to spend Christmas with this year, many are not so lucky.
In 2019 Hammersmith and Fulham council hosted a lunch for 260 people, but the event will not take place this Christmas.

Clearly a Christmas lunch would not be a good idea this year, but this was a party which was much looked forward to and enjoyed by all, as a chance for social contact and festive fun. Older residents were also given a care package, including biscuits, teas and essential items.
Supporting older folks in Shepherd's Bush
Thus there is a question around what we are doing to support older and isolated residents this Christmas? My carer tells me many of her clients have not been out since March this year, and are literally stuck at home looking at four walls. Many do not have family or friends around them, and whilst they do not want to make a fuss, they are genuinely isolated. For some it may by their last Christmas.
We are finding it challenging to hear back from local leaders about what is being put in place to support older residents, and this is no doubt due to the difficult times we are experiencing. I am hearing that some provision is being offered by Age UK. However, this will be limited, and as a neighbour I would implore everyone to be very mindful of the lonely this festive season.
Some might not appreciate strangers knocking on the door, and expecting entry, due to safety concerns. However, I’d say a card or small gift dropped off quietly goes down well with most of us.
Let’s be good friends and neighbours this festive holiday, in any small way we can.
