Lib Dem Candidates Elsie and Fergus Want Your Vote on 7 May

Elsie Gisslegård and Fergus Ustianowski
Local council elections will be held on May 7th. We invited local candidates Elsie Gisslegård and Fergus Ustianowski, who are standing for the Liberal Democrats, why local people should vote for them on May 7th.

"We moved to Shepherd’s Bush because we love it here. We walk the dog on the Green every morning, shop on Uxbridge Road, and feel the same frustrations every other resident does. The litter that lingers, the paths that feel unsafe after dark, the sense that nobody in the council is really listening.

That last bit is what pushed us to stand. When our building on Wood Lane had problems with heating and lifts, we contacted our Labour councillors. We heard nothing back. Knocking on doors across the ward, we’ve found that’s not unusual. Unfortunately, it’s the norm.

So here’s what we’d do differently:

1. The Green itself. Better lighting on paths used after dark, clearer sightlines through overgrown planting, and enforcement of the Public Spaces Protection Order that Labour introduced but never uses. A busy, well-maintained Green is a safe one so we’d also make it easier for local groups to run events there.

2. Shepherd’s Bush Market. The market is one of the most distinctive assets in the ward and investment in it is welcome.  But it has to be done right.  We’d work with Yoo Capital to ensure development respects the market’s character and scale, protects long-standing traders from being priced out, and is shaped by genuine consultation with stallholders and residents, before decisions are made instead of after.

3. Housing. H&F has the worst housing maladministration rate in the country. 88% with 85 findings of failure across just 33 cases. We’d introduce strict repair deadlines with automatic compensation for breaches, proactive damp and mould inspections, and published quarterly scorecards for contractors so residents can see what’s actually being fixed.

4. Streets and Recycling. Enforce commercial waste collection times so Uxbridge Road isn’t lined with bin bags all day. Published targets for graffiti and fly-tipping removal, with a simple trackable reporting route for residents.

We live here. We’ll hold regular surgeries, keep in touch year-round, and explain our voting record."
