Demolition of BBC Car Park to Begin in June

The old BBC Car Park on Wood Lane is to be demolished; work will start on or around 11th June 2021.

The old car park is a massive structure filled with concrete ramps, and with deep foundations.  It will take "at least 35 weeks" to remove it, so local residents in Macfarlane Rd must brace themselves for many months of noise, mess and general disruption.

The new building is to be constructed by Peabody Trust; it will be called Macfarlane Place, and comprises two buildings, including 142 "affordable" housing units

Local resident Belinda Mitchell-Innes attended a recent meeting with the developers, Stanhope.  She posted highlights from the meeting below:
  • Demolition has to go ahead slowly, due to the scale of the project.
  • The contractor doing the demolition are called Cantillon, one of the "leading demolition contractors in the UK"
  • The plane trees at the top of Macfarlane Rd are staying - but they will be be pruned
  • Demolition starts "from the top down"
  • There will be a big crane to lift rubble on the site, and also lorries will enter the site from Wood Lane.  There will be "a lot of lorries carrying the rubbish away."
  • Cantillon will install noise screens (acoustic barriers) on the scaffolding and dust barriers. They will try and make sure there are 'respite gaps' for people very sensitive to noise able to arrange important calls (two hours noise, one hour quiet).
  • There will be a "noise test" this Friday at 1.30pm. Ten minutes on and ten minutes off x3. There are noise monitors from Stanhope and the council who will be involved. They will create a "noise calendar" so that residents know what to expect
  • Demolition "will take at least 35 weeks"; they "have to go slowly because of the tube line"
  • Working hours will be 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 1pm on Saturdays and no Bank Holidays. There may be some times when wok will happen outside these hours but residents will be notified in advance.
  • The foundations are going to be the difficult bit. Particularly at the top end of Macfarlane Road by the Car Park.
  • Cantillon "will communicate [with residents] on a regular basis". They are suggesting online monthly meetings.
  • There will be a complaints and resolution procedure. Contacts by email and by phone and details will be made available.
