Local MP Andy Slaughter and Hammersmith and Fulham Council Leader Stephen Cowan have both backed Yvette Cooper for leadership of the Labour Party.

It's curious that the front runner candidate Jeremy Corbyn enjoys such strong support among the party membership - but very little among Labour MPs or Council leaders.

There is a big disconnect between the hopes and dreams of the rank and file members and the men and women elected to represent them.

It's also a sign of how worried Labour MPs must be that they are prepared to make public statements in favour of the candidates that polls suggest cannot win.  Anyone who is betting against Jeremy Corbyn right now is a brave soul.

Politicians talk a lot about jobs but, of course, they have jobs too. No politician wants a party leader they think may jeopardise their own chances of re-election.

Nonetheless, H&F Council Leader Stephen Cowan, said,  "I'm backing Yvette. I have known Yvette Cooper since 2005 and know her leadership is exactly suited to taking the fight to Cameron and Osborne and winning again for the people most needing a Labour government. These are perilous times with the Tories looking to shrink public services by 40%. I believe only Yvette Cooper can bring the Tories to a halt and deliver the change our country needs at the 2020 general election".

Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter, said,  “Time and time again Yvette has shown that she has what it takes to be a great Labour Leader. I have known her for many years and admire her integrity and commitment to advancing social justice.”

The Labour Leadership results will be announced on September 12th.
