Fantastic Mr Fox at The Lyric is Properly Fantastic

We are blessed with two excellent theatres in our neighbourhood: The Bush Theatre, and the Lyric in Hammersmith. Right now the Bush Theatre is closed, following a year-long restoration. But the Lyric is open and putting on some great shows.

Our reviewer Toni Sharpe recently caught Fantastic Mr Fox at The Lyric, and describes it as "properly fantastic".

See her full review below.

Lyric Hammersmith
"This production, on now at The Lyric Hammersmith, combines: excellent energetic performances; humour which is actually funny; exciting staging and lighting; as well as delightful singing and dancing. The story, is of course, by Roald Dahl. All in all it’s a romp.

I normally loathe a musical and won’t go to them at all. Panto depresses me. Am also almost allergic to anything meant for a children’s audience (having taught for rather a long time).

However, this is an entertaining and thought provoking show for all age groups (or maybe 7+, as it might frighten a sensitive KS1 child with occasional loud gunshots and general high energy gusto).

In addition, the themes of conservation, relationships and war are not excessively stressed, but they rumble away interestingly under the surface.

I hate to come across as a snob, but when I see “RSC” against a number of actors’ past work in the programme, I can’t help but feel encouraged. The performers have generally attended top drama schools, acted for leading theatre companies and done interesting work. This shows.

It's a great show. "

Fantastic Mr Fox is playing at The Lyric Hammersmith until 19 February. To book tickets, follow this link to the official site.
