The Corner House replaced a rather quirky vintage furniture store, and represented (at least in theory) an innovative and potentially new way of using former retail space.
What was the Corner House?
The Corner House was a cafe and play space for young children. The entrepreneurs who set it up had found a gap in the market - to create a place where young parents could take small children and let them play in an environment which was safe, friendly and - above all - welcoming. Meanwhile, instead of shivering in a run-down toddler's playground in a windswept park, Mums and Dads could enjoy a decent coffee and even lunch, all without annoying the people at your neighbouring table when your kids have a massive temper tantrum.
I took my children there a few times and was impressed by how well they managed a relatively small urban space, offering quality soft play for the kids and decent food for grown-ups.
So it's a pity that this innovative and intelligent use of high street retail space didn't work out. At the moment, the official website says that they are "crowdfunding soon", so it may be that this useful and attractive venue will yet find new life.
No-one at the Corner Shop was available for comment, either by telephone or email.

Pity to see it go. Any word on what will replace it?
